Philip Murdoch was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August 1968. Philip grew up in Brazil as part of a very international family. His father is Brazilian, his mother is Uruguayan, and he has Argentinean, American, and British grandparents. Philip moved to the United States to attend Louisiana State University where he received an Engineering degree. While in the United States, Philip met and married an American, Renee Elliot Murdoch, with whom he has four children: Julia, Micah, Caroline, and Ethan. Philip worked as a Civil Engineer in the United States, Mexico, and Chile for four years before accepting a position as Chief of Staff and Administrator of a large church in Southeastern USA.
In 2000, Philip and his family returned to Brazil to plant a local church (www.ilan.org.br) and initiate a church planting ministry called Light to the Nations (www.lttn.life). The church is now well established and Philip works extensively mentoring a team of church planters through the Surge Churches Network (www.surgechurches.com). Together they have planted over 520 churches in Brazil. As a part of this missions project Philip travels around Brazil holding church planting seminars to train young church planters, publishes training material through a ministry publishing company and coordinates a network of pastors through multi-city pastor’s breakfasts. In addition to the church planting efforts, Philip’s ministry includes an apprenticeship program called The Global Apprenticeship Program or GAP (www.thegap.com.br). The focus of this is to train and develop young men and women from Brazil and America who feel they may have a call to full time missions or church planting.
In 2006, Philip opened a publishing company called Editora Luz às Nações (www.edilan.com.br). The focus of this publishing company is to assist in the publication, promotion, and distribution of Christian training materials and books currently unavailable in Portuguese. EDILAN now publishes over 60 titles by major Christian authors, such as John Bevere, Robert Morris, Dutch Sheets, Bill Johnson, to name but a few. Most titles are now available in both print and ebook editions. The company distributes to all states in Brazil, as well as internationally.
In late October, 2012, Philip’s wife Renee was brutally attacked by a deranged homeless man as she walked along the beach in Rio de Janeiro. Renee’s injuries were extensive and the medical professionals gave her less than a 20% chance to live. Pastor Philip, his family, and church led extended family and friends all over the world to pray for Renee and to stand in faith believing God for her total healing. God did a miracle. Renee was home from the hospital within one month of the attack and is now completely restored to health. Today Renee travels all over Brazil as well as internationally sharing her amazing testimony and preaching the gospel.
